European live trial for Intelligent Transport Systems

Successful testing event in Livorno shows convergence between IoT and ITS

The 5th ETSI ITS Plugtests™ for co-operative transport systems aimed at testing in real life conditions vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. This two-week testing event was organised around the port of Livorno, Italy, and ended on November 17th 2016 .

This event was the outcome of several months of preparation work between ETSI and its partners ERTICO, CNIT, Livorno Port Authority, Regione Toscana (Tuscan Regional Government), AVR (Livorno/Florence highway), Autostrade Tech (motorway network), and Telecom Italia to put in place the testbed.

It achieved a real-life trial of the ITS ecosystem, from infrastructure to applications in vehicles, thus demonstrating conformance to ETSI ITS Release 1 standards. On Board Unit vendors had the opportunity to connect their equipment to the infrastructure provided by Road Side Unit vendors and verify their interoperability.

Its success contributes to ITS deployment, by testing interoperability of ITS equipment from all key vendors and demonstrating the convergence between ITS and Internet of Things, where HenetBot contributed to the definition of the ITS-IoT convergence test cases.

Other tests covered "time to green" / traffic sign violation, in-vehicle signage, collision risk warning, tolling mitigation and management of security.

The trial tested in real-life conditions three innovative IoT-ITS scenarios in which an event detected at the IoT gateway is notified to the surrounding vehicles through the ITS communications. The events tested covered environmental sensing (hazard or pedestrian on the road, loading / unloading zone management) and on board sensing (vehicle with dangerous goods on the road).
